The Film

Arcadia is a near future series. A few years after a big natural disaster almost nothing is left of the world as we now it. The one city that survived is ‘Arcadia’. Surrounded by a big wall en under strict regime people managed to survive. When you don’t preform within specs deportation is the only thing left. Trying to survive ‘out there’ is impossible. Or is it?

The Idea

Building a brand new world is a great challenge. We wanted to make a wide pallet to make the world a believable place. Choosing different shooting styles and different style’s of light for every occasion. The series expands from the smallest rooms in tight and dark living spaces to huge buildings and wide and vast landscapes. But the main goal was to film the people up and close and make sure that you would start to feel as they feel.

The Solution

I chose to partner up with Arri and Cooke again for this one. Two workhorse alexa mini’s and a big Cooke 5i set performed very well. Classis Zeiss Super speeds and rock solid fujinon zooms completed the package.  Together with Tim Oliehoek and the great production designer Kurt Looyens we created a completely new look. My awesome team with very experienced crew from Belgium and The Netherlands worked very hard to make it all happen. Lots of gripped shots but also a lot of handheld and arial work has blended in something really special. I’m very grateful to be part of this huge project.

The Film

The second season of  VPRO Zenith is a scifi youth series packed with suspense and action scenes. We get to learn a whole new world and our main characters struggle while trying to find their way, and each other. 8 X 25 minutes with lots of special effects and practical stunts and great performances!

The Idea

This season was shot in the Netherlands while aiming for a morge international feel. Seeking brutalist locations and deserted powerplants mixed with a 70’s vibe  gave the series a slightly more ‘grown up’ look. We wanted to created a look that would elevate our world without loosing touch of it. Making sure it would be dream-like and scifi without sacrifacing the identification of the audience.

The Solution

Choosing the Alexa Mini paired with Cooke S4’s ensured a slight vintage look and soft while also being the workhorse package we needed. Working with Key Grip Peter van Vught unlocked a world of possibility’s for this production. We could get the camera everywhere we wanted using Mövi, flyline, technocrane, sliders, carmount and dollies. Hijacking al lamp-posts proved a challenge for the light team but being able to create our own bold color-scheme turned out really nice.

The Film

A brand new series for broadcaster KRONCRV exclusively for the online crowds. Our main Character Souraya is haunted by a hacker. Once he has her password things start to spiral out of control with the flick of a switch…

The Idea

Creating a world around Souraya in three different timelines we wanted to make sure the audience follows the high pace action every step of the way. Making big differences instead of subtle ones seemed especially important since the series is aiming at the younger crowds.

The Solution

Choosing a bold mix of 4:3, 16:9 and 1:2.39 ascpect ratio’s and mixing different period lenses did the trick. At any time you can feel where you are in the story. Although we had a tight budget we were able to squeeze out a few Technocranes, dolly’s, drone’s and Mövi scenes thanks to some clever scheduling and an amazing camera- and light crew with lovely people who supported the look all the way.

The Film

This brand new award winning series premiered October 2018 on major broadcaster NPO1 and is all about the bestselling novel ‘The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen’. The wonderful 83 year old Hendrik Groen lives in a elderly home and decides to shake things up!

The Idea

Creating the world of Hendrik Groen for the screen was no easy task. Director Tim Oliehoek teamed up with creator Peter de Smet, writer Martin van Waardenberg and creative producer Anton Smit to make the story work on the screen. Art director Barbara Westra came on board and together with her we created the look for this series. Lensing this story involved a lot of different style’s of storytelling since it’s a dramady. I loved working on this brand new format and got to love the story about this old man and his friends.

The Solution

Working with Gaffer Stijn Jonkhart I developed different lighting style’s throughout the season. As the story unfolds the lighting moods evolve with it through the episodes. Staying close to reality but sometimes taking a bold step into a more dramatic approach. Shot on Cooke primes for their ‘human’ look and Fujinon Zooms when the elderly crowds hit the action! The still is made by Elmer van den Marel.

The Film

This brand new television series for dutch broadcaster AVROTROS is basically the 90’s film-hit Flatliners turned into a medical-fantasy series. 12 episodes of 50 minutes tell the story of 5 young students working in a private clinic who discover that the people around them are not exactly who they seem to be. They stumble upon a dark world beneath the hospital en get hopelessly involved.

The Idea

Directors Dennis Bots, Allard Westenbrink, Aniëlle Webster and Ivan Lopez Nunez turned the script into high speed episodes with lots of suspense, action and of course a snippet of love. Aimed at the younger crowds (16-30) watching channel NPO3 this show is something totally new for the public broadcaster. Creative Director Kaja Wolffers (NL film) wanted a glossy, contrasty look and encouraged the crew to push the visual envelope to the max.

The Solution

DOP colleague Jacco van Ree created the look inside the private clinic and shot most of the episodes 1-3. I signed up for all of the other locations in the first three episodes and I shot episode 4-12. Working with ARRI (Amira and Alexa Mini) and 3 series of Cooke Lenses (Mini S4, S4 and S5) helped a lot creating the look of the series. Together with gaffer Stijn Jonkhart we developed a specific look for every location.

The Film

The storyline is sexy and funny but develops more drama along the way. Starring Sanne Langelaar as callgirl and a huge amount of supporting actors such as Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Susan Visser, Laus Steenbeke, Guusje Eybers, Tom de Ket, Maaike Meyer, Thijs Römer, Dirk Zeelenberg and many others.

The Idea

We wanted to create two separate looks. A bright and open feel for her private life and a more dark en sensual one for the work field. Sometimes it’s comedy but as the story unravels in episodes 4, 5 and 6 the drama comes more in to play.

The Solution

Shooting high key with the F55 can be a challenge. But using quite a big amount of sources for a series like this in combination with the excellent skills of long time gaffer Daan de Boer we made it work. For the more dark en sensual parts we chose to use only soft tungsten lights instead of more modern sources. It ensured perfect skin-tones and a warm atmosphere. We pushed the two looks even further in post with Martin Klein @ filmmore.
